Your Pandemic Flu Emergency Kit
Pandemic Influenza will affect an estimated 35% of the population.
Many will become seriously ill. Normal daily routines will be altered as businesses begin to close or operate with limited staffing. A pandemic influenza outbreak is expected to affect the flow of the services and supplies that we routinely count on. This is of particular concern since the Treasure Valley is one of the most isolated urban areas in the U.S.
Individuals and families may be expected to take care of themselves and their families for quite a while. Because you may not have access to normal services and supplies, you may want to make sure to have these types of items in your emergency preparedness kit:
- A couple of week's worth of food for you and your family. This should be food that is non-perishable and does not need to be refrigerated. You will want a good selection of canned as well as dried foods.
- A two-week supply of prescription medicines for everyone in the family and over the counter medicine to relieve flu symptoms. These may include fever reducers and pain relievers.
- Thermometers, contact solution, prescription eye glasses, allergy medicine, and any other supplies your family uses regularly. This may include rehydration solution, Pedialyte for kids or sports drinks with electrolytes, water, soups, and broth.
- Cell phone batteries, charger, and phone numbers and addresses of health care providers, local hospitals, and the local health department.
- A supply of surgical masks and plastic gloves, which may be useful if you are taking care of sick family members.
- Disinfectants such as chlorine bleach, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and clean water.
Rehydration Solution for Teens and Adults
1 gallon clean water, 1/2 Tablespoon of Sugar, 1/8 Teaspoon of salt.
Mix all ingredients until sugar disappears. You can drink the solution at room temperature.
Solution is not recommended for young children, and should not be heated.
Sanitizing Solution for Surfaces
Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach with 1 Gallon of warm water.
